Second Avenue Subway Investigations

Client: MTA New York City Transit

This project involves 8.5 miles of tunnel from the city's financial district up to 125th Street in Harlem and will require 16 subway stations, subway train storage yards, and connection to the 63rd Street Broadway line.  M&E’s primary task involves the environmental characterization of soil, rock, sediment, and groundwater that would be encountered during project construction.

M&E has collected more than 1,200 soil and 100 groundwater samples and investigated more than 70 underground and above-ground storage tanks within the project right-of-way.  The data generated from these investigations are managed in an extensive database that will be used to evaluate environmental impacts on subway construction and operations, support the preparation of environmental findings reports, develop spoils management and dewatering management plans, and provide the environmental data to support the project’s GIS.
