Caltrans Stormwater Control

Client: California Department of Transportation

The Los Angeles River currently suffers from a high volume of trash that is swept into the water by stormwater run off.  A significant portion of this trash emanates from the roads, bridges, parking lots, and other facilities owned by the California DOT (Caltrans) which has embarked on a multi million-dollar stormwater management program.  As part of this program, working with AECOM sister company DMJM Harris, M&E has developed standard designs for structures that screen out trash and natural occurring debris, resist blocking, and drain completely within 72 hours to avoid mosquito breeding.

Over the next decade, the structures will be spliced into existing drainage pipes and also installed as part of new Caltrans projects within the watershed.

In the next phase of the project, M&E will design structures that can function in atypical sites, such as those on steep slopes.
