Nashua Wet Weather Control Program
Client: City of Nashua, New Hampshire
The EPA’s original control plan, based on sewer separation, would have cost over $250 million and would have taken 20 years to implement. The new plan, developed by M&E and approved by EPA, has a construction value of $42 million and will only take 9 years to implement.
M&E’s detailed sampling, monitoring and computer modeling helped develop a more accurate picture of how the sewer system behaved under a variety of conditions. Staff also built and calibrated a receiving water model that was used to evaluate control alternatives in terms of their benefit to the receiving waters.
This led to a plan that makes better use of Nashua’s existing infrastructure and is based on a series of relatively inexpensive modifications and improvements. The system will be able to store considerably more flow than previously and transport it to the city’s treatment facility in a controlled fashion without overwhelming capacity and creating overflows.
M&E has subsequently designed the centerpiece of the new system, a 60-mgd wet weather control facility. The new facility will be located at the site of the city’s plant, increasing the plant’s overall capacity to 110 mgd. |
