Gaza Coastal Aquifer Management Program
Client: U.S. Agency for International Development
The Gaza coastal aquifer is the primary water source for the Gaza Strip, but it is in danger of becoming unusable. M&E developed an integrated 20-year plan for managing Gaza’s water resources. It covers the engineering, financial, and institutional aspects of water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection, treatment, and recharge; and agricultural irrigation with reclaimed water. The plan includes schedules and costs for the phased construction of major infrastructure facilities requiring the investment of some $1.5 billion over the next 20 years.
M&E developed engineering alternatives for a 360,000 m3/d water system; 167,000 m3/d seawater desalination facility; 340,000 m3/d wastewater system; stormwater management; agricultural irrigation; surface water protection; aquifer protection; solid waste management; and water demand and water quality management.
