Mill Cove Relief Siphon
Client: Massachusetts Water Resources Authority
This relief siphon across Weymouth’s Mill Cove reduces the frequency and quantity of raw sewage overflows in the area. It was constructed using the trenchless technique known as horizontal directional drilling. This technique is rarely attempted with pipe of this large size; moreover, pipe of this size has not often been constructed of the type of material chosen, high density polyethene.
The innovative approach taken to this project kept costs down, allowed the MWRA to meet the fast-track schedule and resulted in minimal environmental and impact. The siphon went into operation nearly a month ahead of the schedule set by the legislative directive.
