Nitrogen Removal Applied Research Program

Client: New York City DEP

In response to the need to limit the discharges of nitrogen into Long Island Sound, New York City is engaged in a long-term program to upgrade its wastewater treatment plants. As part of this program, Metcalf & Eddy has piloted alternative biological nutrient removal (BNR) technologies and is now running a $20 million research facility for NYCDEP. M&E won a 2001 ACEC Engineering Grand Excellence Award for a DNA sequencing study that helps optimize the BNR process and potentially reduces costs. More recently, M&E won a National Research Technology Award from AMSA for a research project on an innovative dual-stage sludge digestion process implemented for the New York City system.

M&E services included:

  • Piloting of BNR removal technologies
  • Preparation of a nitrogen control feasibility plan that identifies feasible technologies for each plant
  • Design of the first ever SHARON process facility in the U.S.
  • Development of a long-term plan and master schedule
  • Management of a full-scale laboratory for chemical analysis and biological identification
