Bear Creek Water Mains

Client: Athens-Clarke County, Georgia

This project consists of two 36-inch pipelines, which run as dual pipelines for 6.2 miles, and a 36-inch single main that extends 2.8 miles. The ductile iron mains were designed to convey up to 35 mgd of raw water from the Upper Oconee Water Authority's reservoir in Jackson County to the Jack G. Beacham water treatment plant in Athens.

The critical challenges during the design and construction phase were approximately 70 permanent easements along the proposed alignment and major petroleum pipeline crossings, as well as design and construction planning for crossing a river, several major highways, and active rail lines. Steel-cased bores were made across 15 road or railroad crossings, and the Middle Oconee River was partially diverted for the water mains crossing under the river.

M&E Services included:

  • Preliminary Engineering
  • Detailed Design and Surveying
