FAQs

Are there still people called Metcalf and Eddy associated with the firm?

No, there is no one called Metcalf or Eddy with the company any more. Co-founder Leonard Metcalf died in 1926. Harrison Eddy died 11 years later. His son, Harrison Eddy, Jr., was a partner and eventually president until the partnership was bought out by the Bangor Punta holding company in 1967. That marks the end of direct involvement by the "founding fathers" and their families.

To what extent is Metcalf & Eddy a national company rather than a New England company? And does the company do much international work?

M&E was founded in Boston and New England is still M&E’s home base.  Corporate headquarters are in Wakefield, Massachusetts.  However, the company has offices all over the country, and offices outside New England are today responsible for nearly 75 percent of annual revenues.

M&E has worked on international projects since the 1970s, with particular emphasis on the middle east.  International operations typically account for about 10 percent of M&E’s annual revenues.

Is there a companion M&E textbook on the water side to match the wastewater text?

No, at this time there is not an M&E textbook covering the entire water engineering field. We have instead chosen to focus on the critical area of water reuse. As the demands on fresh water supplies increase, reuse of cleaned wastewater for irrigation or aquifer recharge becomes an increasingly attractive strategy, since it frees up primary water supplies for potable use. McGraw-Hill is about to publish our textbook, entitled Water Reuse: Issues, Technologies, and Applications, which represents the distillation of our experience in this area.

Does M&E still do contract operations at water and wastewater plants?

M&E's contract operations division was spun off several years ago when we were affiliated with a company specializing in water and wastewater system contract operation services. Nevertheless, the staff still has considerable expertise in this area, so that operational considerations are always given high priority in our design work. Several M&E engineers, for instance, have plant operator licenses. We provide start-up and troubleshooting services and develop and deliver training for both water and wastewater system operations staff.
